Vested Interest May 2012
This column, my last President’s Thoughts, is written a week before Greg Shevlin replaces me as President of ITLA. For months, various people have said to me “aren’t you glad it’s about over?”. But for being able to concentrate again on my law practice, I cannot say I am glad my ITLA year is coming to an end.

Vested Interest November/December 2011
A week before I became President of the Illinois Trial Lawyers Association, my former boss, Tom Demetrio, called to congratulate me and told me to “make sure you have fun.” I have heeded his advice, and am thoroughly enjoying working for ITLA and for what this organization stands: protecting the civil justice system in Illinois so that citizens have a level playing field in our courts.

Vested Interest September 2011
The readers of Vested Interest are well aware that during the last decade or so, there have been fewer civil cases proceeding to jury trial.  Various reasons for this have been propounded, including the progression of so-called alternative dispute resolution where mutually agreed upon mediators or arbitrators get the claims resolved before jury selection begins.

Vested Interest June 2011
In this, my first Vested Interest President’s page, I will mention a few of the matters addressed in my remarks at the ITLA Installation Dinner on June. 10

It truly is a previlege to hlep lead ITLA, now 58 years old, and a constant fighter for injury victims’ rights in Illinois. When ITLA was created by James Dooley (later Illinois Supreme Court Justice Dooley), his associate Philip Corboy and other plaintiffs’ attorneys, victims’ rights were far from what they are today. Imagine having a cap of $10,000 for a wrongful death action.
